The end of cheap oil Every industrialized country is addicted to oil. Germany, for example, consumes about 174, 900,000,000 liters of crude oil each year. By itself motor traffic has doubled in volume since 1970, as measurd in 2006. Within the last 6 years the German bill for oil imports has increased sevenfold to 70 000 million Euros, due to the increase in price from 11 to 77 US-Dollars per barrel. At 77 Dollars per barrel of crude oil the cost to Germany is about 83 000 million Euros each year (equivalent to about 45 Euro Cents per liter); each increase in the price of oil diminishes the buying power of the average citizen. This development has an impact in just about every country in the world.
Independent experts have been warning for decades about the dangers inherent in our wasteful society – after a relatively short period of excessive consumption by a small fraction of the world population, raw materials will become scarce and expensive: we will experience dramatically growing oil prices in just a few years. Natural gas, uranium and many other resources will soon follow suit.
The introduction of energy saving technology and renewable energy can prevent us from many problems, but this won't be sufficient. Without a drastic reduction in consumption and transportation we will not be able to deal with the problems which will arise in the near future.
